How to access icare-funded psychology in NSW

Psychological injury under a NSW workers compensation claim is funded through icare (Insurance and Care NSW) and administered by SIRA (State Insurance Regulatory Authority). The pathway differs from Medicare-funded psychology:

1. Report the injury to your employer

   You must notify your employer of the psychological injury. If your employer has a workers compensation insurer, the claim will be managed by that insurer (many employers are insured through icare). If your employer is self-insured, the claim is managed differently.

2. See your GP and get a referral

   Your treating GP prepares a referral to a psychologist. The GP or insurer then submits an Allied Health Treatment Request (AHTR) to the insurer for approval. Your GP should be aware that this is a workers comp referral, not a Medicare Mental Health Treatment Plan.

3. Wait for AHTR approval

   Once approved, the insurer authorises a number of psychology sessions at the SIRA gazetted rate. The psychologist bills the insurer directly. You do not pay a gap fee for approved sessions.

4. Attend sessions (in-person or via telehealth)

   Sessions can be in-person at the psychologist's practice or via telehealth where available. Telehealth is permitted under SIRA guidelines. The psychologist will develop a Recovery Plan and provide treatment progress reports to the insurer.
